Kuro-Sheeva Spotted

timtim | December 14, 2009
Kuro-Sheeva Joining the party of next generation Kirkwood based NAS is the Kuro-Sheeva device. This appears to be essentially the same as a Sheevaplug but with an eSATA port also available.

The question is when we can get them in Europe/USA at a reasonable price – hopefully Revolution will stock them (they appear to be available here but with a high mark up!). You can find more information and pictures at kuroutoshikou.com.

Xtreamer NAS Launch Imminent

timtim | August 31, 2009
The Xtreamer e-Trayz NAS

The Xtreamer e-Trayz NAS

Xtreamer have posted information on their upcoming e-TRAYz device in their forum. This device at first glance appears to include the standard features you would expect in a typical NAS and features a pretty low price tag for a two bay NAS!

Initially you will need to own one of their media streamer devices to order one of these babies. Also one bit of information for NAS-Central readers from the FAQ:

“Q. Will the eTRAYz be based on open source ?
A. No. The community will not be able to write code to this product nor it will be released.”

Thanks engadget.

QNAP TS-219P Reviewed

timtim | August 3, 2009
The QNAP TS-219P

The QNAP TS-219P

QNAP have a new Kirkwood based NAS device available – the TS-219P. This features the new 1.2 Ghz Marvell Kirkwood processor, 512 MB RAM and QNAPs new AJAX GUI and promises to be significantly faster than the older, slower Orion based models.

QNAPs products previously came with one of the best manufacturer supplied firmwares for home NAS devices and have good build quality but usually come out a bit more expensive than competing products. Read the review over at The Register and check out the TS-219P product page to see if they are keeping their standards high!

Update: For the curious pictures of the disassembly and internals of the TS-219P and the TS-219 are up at the Debian section of Martin Michlmayrs site.

i-o data to launch hdl-gs nas range soon

timtim | November 22, 2007

Debuting in Japan in mid December is the new HDL-GS line of NAS devices from I-O Data. Among its many features are GBit ethernet, disk sizes ranging from 250 GB to 1 TB, an iTunes music server, DNLA compliant media streamer and OS X client as well as Windows.

Another worthy feature of note is its ability to copy photos from a digital camera via USB, which are manageable by a nice web based interface. Oh yes, it has a pretty looking case too.

So looks like it has all the standard features you’d expect from a good consumer NAS device, but what’s inside it? Is this one going to make it outside of Japan? Currently it seems there is zero information about its hardware available, but we’d guess it might be running Linux like its cousin the GLAN Tank.
